Day 1/14 Iron Sharpener: This is our theme and practice of a disciple at St. John we’re covering for the next two weeks. Proverbs 27:17 The Voice | In the same way that iron sharpens iron, a person sharpens the character of his friend. Prayer: Jesus, help us to grow in trusting relationships, so that we can encourage one another in growth and faith. Amen.

Day 2/14 Iron Sharpener | Ruth promised to stay by Naomi’s side and God taught them both so much. Ruth 1:16-17 - "But Ruth replied, 'Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.'" | Father, keep us close to those we care about and help us sharpen each other in You. Amen.

Day 3/14 Iron Sharpener | David and Jonathan had a bond of friendship almost instantly. | 1 Samuel 18:1-4 MSG- " By the time David had finished reporting to Saul, Jonathan was deeply impressed with David—an immediate bond was forged between them. He became totally committed to David. From that point on he would be David’s number-one advocate and friend. Saul received David into his own household that day, no more to return to the home of his father. Jonathan, out of his deep love for David, made a covenant with him. He formalized it with solemn gifts: his own royal robe and weapons—armor, sword, bow, and belt." Prayer: Father, you are faithful in bringing good friends into our lives. Help us to always cherish them. Amen.

Day 4/14 Iron Sharpener | Sometimes iron sharpening is just being near to one another. Job 2:11-13 - "Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him. And when they raised their eyes from afar, and did not recognize him, they lifted their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe and sprinkled dust on his head toward heaven.  So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great." Prayer: Holy Spirit, Your presence is comforting. Help me to be comforting to my spiritual brothers and sisters. Amen.

Day 5/14 Iron Sharpener | These two prophets were definitely sharpening each other, and they were dedicated to one another. 2 Kings 2:2 - "And Elijah said to Elisha, 'Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel.' But Elisha replied, 'As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!' So they went down together to Bethel." Prayer: Father, help me to commit my life to those you’ve entrusted to me in friendship. Amen.

Day 6/14 Iron Sharpener | Sometimes Iron Sharpening requires us to challenge each other to step into new responsibilities for the Lord. Daniel 2:48-49 - “Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.” Prayer: Father, give me the confidence to encourage my friends to step into new things in faith. Amen.

Day 7/14 Iron Sharpener | Iron Sharpening relationships allow us to be honest and vulnerable with one another. Luke 10:38 - "As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him." (NIV)

John 11:21-23 - "'Lord,' Martha said to Jesus, 'if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.'” Prayer: Jesus, thank you for showing us what honest, vulnerable, authentic friendships look like. Open my heart to do the same. Amen.

Day 8/14 Iron Sharpener | Can you imagine the iron sharpening that must happen when you’d risk your life for a friend? Romans 16:3-4 - "Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them." (NIV)  Dear Jesus, help us give our whole lives to You and those we walk alongside in faith. Amen.

Day 9/14 Iron Sharpener | Dear friends are priceless. They sharpen us and encourage us. We long to be with them. Philippians 2:19-26 - "I want to be encouraged by news about you. So I hope the Lord Jesus will soon let me send Timothy to you. I don't have anyone else who cares about you as much as he does. The others think only about what interests them and not about what concerns Christ Jesus. But you know what kind of person Timothy is. He has worked with me like a son in spreading the good news. I hope to send him to you, as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me. And I feel sure that the Lord will also let me come soon. I think I ought to send my dear friend Epaphroditus back to you. He is a follower and a worker and a soldier of the Lord, just as I am. You sent him to look after me, but now he is eager to see you. He is worried, because you heard he was sick."  Father God, give us friends like Timothy and Epaphroditus. Help us not to take our friends for granted. Amen.

Day 10/14 Iron Sharpener | Sharpening takes two. Sacrifice, vulnerability and empathy are required. Jesus taught us that. John 15:12-13 TPT // So this is my command: Love each other deeply, as much as I have loved you. For the greatest love of all is a love that sacrifices all. And this great love is demonstrated when a person sacrifices his life for his friends. Prayer: Jesus, form me into the kind of person who is willing to give of myself in order that my friend would grow. Amen.

Day 11/14 Iron Sharpener | Sharpening others requires interaction, intentionality, connection and encouragement. Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT // Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Prayer: Holy Spirit, fill my life with opportunities to be shaped as You continually bring us together in community. Amen.

Day 12/14 Iron Sharpener | Iron Sharpeners invite one another into the important parts of their lives. John 15:15 “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”  Prayer: Jesus, help me to open my life like You did and share all You’ve done for me. Amen.

Day 13/14 Iron Sharpener | What should we use as a resource in our iron sharpening relationships? | 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word which leads us, guides us and teaches us everyday to be more like You. Amen.

Day 14/14 Iron Sharpener | When you don’t know what to do next in an iron sharpening relationship, take the Apostle Paul’s lead. | 1 Corinthians 1:11 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. | Prayer: Jesus, You set the course. Your light is a path to my feet. Before I try to lead or sharpen someone else, let me first follow You. Amen.
